Tatoos

These leaves on this tree intrigued me. The leaves are large and look to have been tattooed with some sort of tribal design like a Maori or something.

I have no idea what kind of plant or tree this is. I'm pretty good with internet searches but trying to look up plants give me a headache. If I do find something I'm looking for in the plant world, it's never easy.

What's up with all the plant sites with huge verbal descriptions and no drawings or photos? That's just criminal.

I'll just let this one be a mystery.

I like the description of the leaves having tatoos. Don't know what it is either but you got a nice shot of them.
I'm visual so all the word descriptions would give me a headache too.

That's a great shot of the backlit leaf. I love your description of it having tattoos to :) It looks like some kind of fern or bracken which typically grow their spores on the underside of the leaf.

It reminds me of spores on the underside of a fern leaf, but this isn't a fern. I don't think I've ever seen anything like this on a tree.

My first thought was "fern" too -- I am definitely not good with naming plants/trees - but I do love to look at them. This is a very nice shot!

it's an awesome find, John....looks like nails have been dug into those leaves , leaving those patterns behind.Ouch!

Aren't they weird...but lovely too. Don't know what they are!!

it is absolutely a fern. the round dots are sori- spore casings on the underside.
Heres a photo from a botany site of the same fern:
